Studio light is four decisions, not an adjective. Name the four and the render stops looking lit by nothing.

The problem

“Professional studio lighting” means nothing to the model, so it averages every studio image it has ever seen and gives you a flat, sourceless glow. There’s no direction to it, no falloff, and usually no contact shadow · which is why the product looks pasted onto the surface.

A photographer makes four choices: where the key light sits, how big and soft it is, how much fill comes back from the other side, and whether there’s a rim separating the product from the background. Write those four and you get light that behaves.

“A single large softbox” is the whole trick. One named source forces every highlight and shadow to agree with each other, which is exactly what the checklist in tells is looking for.

The contact shadow gets its own clause because the model will otherwise skip it. Without it nothing has weight.

“No colored spill onto the product” is the guard against a documented failure: warm scene lighting quietly recolors the product itself, so a cream jar drifts amber and no longer matches the brand. More on holding that in lock.

What to watch for

• Two competing highlight directions on a glossy surface · the model has quietly invented a second light.
• Shadow edges that are hard on one object and soft on another in the same frame.
• The rim light creeping into a full halo, which reads as compositing rather than lighting.
