A campaign is not six good images. It's six images that were obviously taken on the same day.
The problem
The most common failure in a delivered set isn’t a bad image, it’s six good images that don’t belong together. Different light directions, different surfaces, different color temperatures, different distances. Each one passes on its own and the set looks like a mood board.
Real shoots are consistent because they’re expensive: one studio, one lighting setup, one surface, one afternoon. You reproduce that by fixing those variables up front and treating them as locked for the whole run.
The shoot plan
The split between fixed and varying is the entire method. If more than one thing changes between two shots, they stop reading as the same shoot and you can’t tell which change caused it.
Shot six (the model shot) has to inherit the same key light direction as the product shots or the set breaks at exactly the image the client will lead with.
Six is a deliberate number. It fills a feed row, covers a PDP, and is roughly what a concept yields in a couple of hours of production.
What to watch for
- Color temperature drifting between shots · the least visible break individually and the most visible across a set.
- The texture shot wandering onto a different surface because it was generated last and separately.
- Reviewing images one at a time. Always review the set as a grid; that’s how the client will see it.
The drill
Build the six-shot set above for one product, in one sitting, changing only the per-shot line. Then lay all six out as a 3x2 grid and look at it as a whole rather than as six images. Anything that jumps out is a variable that escaped the fixed block. That grid, once it holds together, is a portfolio piece and a case study at the same time.
