Retouched skin is the fastest way to lose a beauty client. Ask for the texture back.

The problem

These models were trained on an internet full of already-retouched imagery, so their idea of skin is poreless, evenly toned, faintly plastic, and lit like a phone beauty filter. For a beauty or skincare brand this is fatal: the product is a skincare claim, and the model’s face is the evidence against it.

What you want is skin that looks like skin in good light · visible pores, uneven tone, a little redness, vellus hair catching the rim light. It has to be asked for explicitly, because the default is the opposite.

The negative half of that block is doing as much work as the positive half. “No skin smoothing” is a specific instruction; “natural skin” on its own is not.

Vellus hair is the highest-value single detail in the list. It catches the rim light, and its absence is what makes an otherwise good face read as a mannequin.

Naming where (cheeks, nose, jaw, hairline) gives the model somewhere to put the texture. Unplaced, it applies an even noise across the whole face, which is its own kind of wrong.

What to watch for

• Pore texture applied as uniform grain over the entire face rather than concentrated where pores actually are.
• Skin that passes at full size and turns plastic at thumbnail · check both.
• Hands. Beauty shots put a hand near the face and the hand is a separate problem; see tells.
• Over-correcting into visible blemishes the brand won’t sign off on. The target is real, not rough.
